Donny Riki

donny riki, dignity 2016

Donny Riki of Ngāpuhi & Ngāti Paoa descent,  is a direct descendant of Kupe – the great warrior who discovered Aotearoa (known by colonisers as New Zealand).  A psychotherapist by trade, Donny challenges eurocentric theories of psychotherapy & “mental health” – utilising traditional centripetal applications as the foundtion to her practice & more recently, response-based practice ideas.

With a background in acute mental health, Donny’s passion is in whakamōmori mate (suicidality), tino rangatiratanga (cultural identity reclamation) & trauma recovery. She also advocated for mandatory cultural competency for non-Māori therapists within the NZAP, which was enforced in 2013.

While Donny currently works in private practice, provides supervision & delivers decolonisation workshops cross-sectorially; she also continues the crusade for cultural redress, equity & social justice.
