Canada’s First Queer, Trans, and Two-Spirit Youth Housing Program
Allan Lindley and Aaron Munro will discuss their roles in opening Canada’s first Queer, Trans and Two-Spirit youth housing program. As part of the project’s inception, RainCity Housing and Support Society spent years fundraising and creating awareness about the need for housing designed specifically for Queer, Trans, and Two-Spirit young people without homes. In January of 2015 the project was realized and RainCity now operates a housing program on the unceded ancestral homelands of the Səl̓ílwətaʔ, Xʷməθkwəy̓əm, & Sḵwx̱wú7mesh peoples. To date, the project has housed 25 young Queer, Trans and Two-Spirit folks who had been chronically or episodically without housing. Allan and Aaron will speak about their experiences of meeting these young people, the ethics that have been embraced in the project and what engaged them in this work.
